Introduction of the Biennial
The International Print Biennial - Varna is the first in Bulgaria and is among the ten oldest events for graphic art in Europe. With its twenty-third edition, it marks the 46th year of its creation.
Organizers of the International Print Biennial - Varna are: Varna Municipality, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Union of Bulgarian Artists. The direct executor of the exhibition is the Graphic Art Gallery - Varna. IPB is held under the patronage of the mayor of the city of Varna. Proof of the prestige of the Varna Biennial is the large number of authors who regularly participate in the exhibition and present countries all over the world with their works.
The total number of countries that are represented in the biennial from all continents is over 57, such as those with centuries-old traditions in graphic art - China, Japan, Thailand, Poland, India, Turkey and Italy, and countries such as Peru, Iran are of undoubted interest. , Nepal, Paraguay, Syria and Puerto Rico.
The awards of the International Print Biennial - Varna are awarded by an international jury, which includes distinguished personalities from the world of graphics. The prizes awarded are: Grand Prize of the City of Varna, Special Prize of the Jury and Three Prizes of equal value.
The International Print Biennial - Varna is documented through a bilingual, color catalog. It is sent to the participants, as well as to cultural institutions in the country and abroad.
The twenty-third edition of International Print Biennial - Varna opens on August 14th, 2025 in the Boris Georgiev City Art Gallery, Varna, 1 Lyuben Karavelov Street.




For the first time, the idea of the forum was born in 1979 during the holding of the National Exhibition of Graphics. Its initiators are Prof. Stoimen Stoilov and Prof. Hristo Neikov - Secretary of the "Graphics" Section at Union of Bulgarian Artists (SBH) - Sofia. The first edition was in 1981, and by statute it was announced as the National Biennial of Graphic art with international participation. The main organizers then were: the Culture Committee, the Union of Bulgarian Artists (SBH) and the District Council for Culture - Varna. In 1987, the Council for Spiritual Development of the Council of Ministers officially approved it as the International Print Biennal. In 2001, it was included in the cultural routes of Europe and since then it has been under the auspices of UNESCO.
